Veggie Burger Wrap

One of my favorite cafes in Boston makes a killer veggie burger wrap. I decided to replicate it at home, and, to be honest, I like my version even better. I love when that happens!

I used a jalapeno cheddar wrap, which I filled with a veggie burger patty, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and fat-free honey dijon dressing. A perfect lunch!

I thrifted this sweater at Goodwill the other day and couldn't wait to wear it. B says it looks like a potato sack, but I love it, so whatever.

The last time I wore these light pink pants (which was last fall ), I also paired them with an olive green top. Green and pink is one of my favorite color combinations, and I think it works for both fall and spring, as long as you complement it with the right accessories. Here, I wore fun pink earrings and a bright floral print scarf to add a touch of spring.

I've been so inspired recently by the various ways other bloggers are starting to transition their wardrobes to include some springier pieces. I especially love seeing spring dresses layered with scarves and jackets. I gave the look a try myself here, and the result is one of my favorite outfits yet. How had I never tried pairing olive, navy, and brown before?!

This scarf is one of my absolute favorites (okay, I probably say that about all of my scarves). I adore the color combo - as you can probably tell from the fact that I've built my outfit around it - and I think the floral pattern is perfect, both on its own and paired with other patterns. I hope you like this scarf too because I plan to wear the heck out of it this spring. I couldn't resist interjecting a bit of spring into the rest of my outfit, as well, including a bright dress and a knotted gingham top.

I've learned quickly that there's nothing more frustrating for us style bloggers than uncooperative weather conditions. Rain, snow, cold, etc. can ruin the best outfit, as well as the pictures of said outfit. These pictures are from a very windy day last week (Prior to my getting my hair dyed. Ew.). I couldn't get my hair or clothes to lie still for the life of me, and it made me ridiculously grumpy.

..Then I stepped in a HUGE pile of dog poop outside of school, and suddenly a little wind didn't seem so bad.

I wore this outfit to school on Tuesday, a.k.a. Valentine's Day. I'm not a huge fan of said holiday, mainly because I'm not really a "grand gesture" person. Gratuitous displays make me kind of nervous, really. I was discussing this topic with a similarly-inclined friend, at some point commenting that Valentine's Day seems to always make people feel bad. A fellow (male) classmate overheard and interjected, "Well, even if you feel bad, you look really nice." You, sir, can be my Valentine.

Now before you all turn on me because I've made myself sound like an ice queen, B did come home from work early, and we had a nice little dinner out together to "celebrate."

Monumental

Have I ever explained to you how much I love cupcakes? If not, suffice it to say that I really, really love them. It's kind of a strange love, though, because I've never liked actual cake very much. Hm. Whatevs.

Anyway, I'm kind of on an unofficial mission to visit all the best cupcake shops in Boston, so yesterday B and I headed to Jamaica Plain (for the first time ever) to visit Monumental Cupcakes. The shop is so cute, and their cupcakes were delightful. They also have a menu full of vegetarian and vegan food (as in non-cupcake food), and I can't wait to go back and try more!

This is how they make their coffee. So cool, right? I didn't have any, but B did, and he said it was delicious.

Did you notice my new hair color? (It's okay if you didn't). I recently won a color & highlight by Heather at the Jeffrey Lyle Salon. I think she did a fabulous job, and I am loving my new 'do!

I know I've been all, "OMG I can't wait for spring" lately, but I recently stumbled upon my fall/winter inspiration folder, in which I save photos from blogs and notes about outfits I want to try. One such note said, "stripes + plaid + cardigan." I can't remember exactly what I had in mind when I wrote that note, but I decided to give it a whirl anyway. The result is a little hipster-ish, I think, but I like it overall.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this on the blog before, but I absolutely love old churches. Fortunately, Boston is full of them, and I've made up my mind to visit them all. B shares my obsession, so on Sunday we began our tour of churches at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Mission Hill.

After exploring the church, we wanted a snack, so we wandered around until we stumbled upon Mike's Donuts. It's pretty adorable. B & I ordered coffee and a huge chocolate chip cookie to split, but the sweet woman working insisted we also take a lemon-filled donut for free. Both were delicious.

Chili Cook-Off

On Saturday, my friend Ally and I attended the Harvard Square Chili Cook-Off. That girl loves chili, and I love any event that includes free food. There were eight vendors, a few of which had vegetarian and vegan options. There was also free ice cream, so, yeah, it was pretty much the best day ever..

Crema Cafe's chili was my favorite. The cilantro cream dressing was a great touch.

Lizzy's was there handing out mango ice cream with chili powder seasoning. At first, you could only taste the mango flavor, but the aftertaste was all chili powder. It was spicy (like, really spicy) and weird and kind of delicious.

Pasta with Garbanzo Bean Garlic Sauce

Garbanzo beans quickly became one of my favorite foods after I became a vegetarian. They're so versatile, and I love finding new ways to use them. For this recipe, the garbanzo beans are used to make a delicious pasta sauce!

Here's what you'll need:
2 teaspoons olive oil
2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 can garbanzo beans, drained
1 cup vegetable base
1 box pasta, cooked and drained
1 tomato, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon parsley
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Here's what you'll do:
1. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
2. Add crushed garlic and sauté 1 minute.
3. Add salt, chickpeas, and vegetable base and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 minutes.
4. Place chickpea mixture in a food processor, and process until smooth. Combine chickpea mixture, pasta, tomatoes, minced garlic, parsley, red pepper flakes, and lemon juice. Toss well and serve immediately.

Admittedly, this outfit isn't one of my most creative. It was actually a no-brainer to put together; I bought this shirt in my recent Lands' End Canvas mini shopping spree and knew right away I wanted to pair it with these coral pants, which go perfectly with the sweet floral pattern. I thought it might be awhile before I'd be able to bust out the cropped pants, but we had a convenient 55 degree January day on Wednesday, which I took full advantage of.

Now for the sad part of the story: I spilled butter from a Dunkin Donuts over-buttered bagel on these pants. Damn you, Dunkin! Anyone have any tips on how to remove a butter stain?

Guys, I recently discovered the best deal ever: on Tuesday nights, you can get a burger, fries, and any draft beer at The Draft for $5.99. Basically, you're getting a meal and a beer for the price of a beer. And they have a veggie burger - so even we vegetarians can participate in the fun! Clearly, B and I have found a new Tuesday night tradition.

It's that time of year when everyone is itching for spring. (Or is it just me?) I'm trying not to get ahead of myself since winter can be long and brutal in Boston, but the recent warm and sunny weather has me rooting through my closet looking for springy pieces to incorporate into my outfits. Here, I thought the bright pink tights paired with the floral print skirt were the perfect way to transform an outfit that is otherwise still a little winterish (see: olive top, brown accessories, knee-high boots).

The golden/camel color of the stripes in this sweater has become one of my favorite colors - I think it looks great with everything - so when I saw this sweater at H&M last fall, I fell in love instantly. Until yesterday, though, I hadn't worn it because I had a difficult time styling it. The scarf and sweater combination came together accidentally when I had clothes and accessories strewn across my bed, and I think they look pretty great together. I threw on black denim instead of blue because black and camel is another one of my favorite color combos. All in all, I like the way this outfit turned out, but if you have any other suggestions for how to style this sweater, I'd love to hear them!

Happy (Chinese) New Year!

On Sunday, B and I headed to Boston's Chinatown to watch the Chinese New Year Parade, which consisted of "lions" dancing from business to business, warding off evil spirits and eating oranges and lettuce (which apparently symbolize wealth and health). It was bright and fun and entertaining - the perfect way to spend our afternoon. My only regret is that we didn't venture into any of the restaurants for lunch!

Lettuce and firecracker debris littered the streets.

I'm not sure what an "exotic cocktail" is, but I think I want one!

Veggie Pilaf

I made this recipe for dinner last week. It was excellent, but, as the recipe is, there was barely enough for Ben and me to share. Next time, I think I'll throw some tofu in to make it more substantive.

Here's what you'll need:
1 cup rice
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 onion, finely chopped
1/3 cup thawed frozen carrots
1/3 cup thawed frozen peas
1/3 cup thawed frozen corn
1/4 cup cashew nuts
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1 garlic clove
salt

Here's what you'll do:
1. Prepare rice.
2. Heat oil in frying pan. Add onion and cook for five minutes, until softened and lightly brown.
3. Stir in the carrot and cook for 3-4 minutes.
4. Add rice, peas, corn, cashews, and garlic. Cook for 4-5 minutes over medium heat.
5. Add two cups of water, cumin, and salt. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes over low heat, until the water is absorbed. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

I recently thrifted this sweet leopard print blouse at Goodwill for a few dollars. I almost didn't buy it because it's kind of huge, but then I remembered: Everything looks good with a belt around it. Duh. So I did buy it, and I'm happy I did. Not only is it super cute, it's also 100% silk - easily one of the comfiest pieces of clothing I own. Worn this way, it was perfect for a day of class and homework, but I think I'll be able to dress it up too - maybe with a black skirt and some statement jewelry? Do you have any ideas of other ways to style a flowy, oversized shirt?

Wearing the Pants

I rarely shop retail, but when I received my exam grades a couple of weeks ago, I treated myself to some shopping. Lands' End Canvas was (and still is) having a crazy sale, so I bought this plaid button-down. In the interest of full disclosure, I actually bought several plaid button-downs, as well as a few other items. Don't judge me. For the first time in months, I also went to Urban Outfitters, where I found these pants way on sale. Guys, I'm obsessed! I've been looking for a pair of red pants for awhile now, and while these are a little less red and a little more pink than what I originally had in mind, I actually love them. They'll go with a lot of other items in my wardrobe, and I think the color will work year round. I hope you all like them too - I have a feeling you'll be seeing them often!

Last weekend was a three-day weekend, which was convenient because I had so much I needed to accomplish. I spent most of Monday afternoon at Refuge Cafe doing Property homework, putting the finishing touches on my internship materials, and - okay, you caught me - eating a delicious lunch.

For another long day of being productive I needed another outfit that was both comfy and cute. For me, an easy way to accomplish that look is to wear tights and a cotton dress and to throw on some cute accessories. This scarf is one of my favorites - I can't get over the colorful paisley pattern!

My new obsession: Rooibos latte.

I wanted to be comfy, of course, but I also wanted to wear something bright and fun that would put me in a good mood and motivate me to work. This weekend, after a torturous month of waiting, my classmates and I received the grades for our first semester's law exams. I was very pleased (surprised, even) with my results, so B and I celebrated by visiting a new cafe/bar we'd been wanting to try, The Otherside. They have $5 drafts all month, as well as an impressive menu full of vegetarian and vegan options. I opted for the Original Sin Cider and, not surprisingly, nachos, which I enjoyed as The Terminator played on the big screen over the bar. They play a different movie every Sunday night - I think this could become a new weekend tradition.

My drink: Original Sin Cider.

Crock-Pot Eggplant "Parm"

This recipe is another favorite from the blog A Year of Slow Cooking. It actually uses feta rather than Parmesan cheese, but calling it "eggplant feta" just doesn't have the same ring to it. Besides, it tastes like eggplant parm anyway. Eggplant parm is one of my absolute favorite foods, and this recipe did not disappoint!

Here's what you'll need:

1 eggplant

1 jar of pasta sauce

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 cup bread crumbs

2 t Italian seasoning

1/2 brick of feta, crumbled

Here's what you'll do:

1. Wash eggplant and slice in 1/2 inch thick pieces. Don't peel

2. Pour 1 cup of the pasta sauce into the bottom of crock-pot

3. Combine bread crumbs and seasonings in a shallow dish

4. Paint both sides of each eggplant slice with olive oil and cover with bread crumb mixture

5. Stagger eggplant pieces in layers into the crock-pot, on top of the sauce you've already poured in

6. Cover with slices with the rest of the jar of sauce

7. Crumble the feta all over the top of the sauce

8. Cover crock-pot and cook on low for 4-6 hours, or high for 3-4

9. If you want, serve with past. I actually ate mine without pasta because I love eggplant so much, and, for me, the pasta is just unnecessary.

This was a big week for B and me: I started my second semester of law school and he started a new job. We celebrated in our favorite way - with beers and nachos at Sunset Grill and Tap. Sunset is one of our favorite casual spots for drinks and apps. They have 112 beers on tap, several hundred bottled beers, and the largest food menu I've ever seen. Their nachos are my absolute favorite. I'm a little embarrassed to admit I've eaten them twice in the past week.. and I'm eating leftovers as I type this post.

I discovered Madewell upon moving to Boston in July, and it instantly became my favorite retail store. I don't shop there often (Life on a law student's budget. Sigh.), but, luckily, my stepmother-in-law sent me a Madewell gift card for Christmas. I spent some of it the other day and bought two shirts, including this plaid one, for a total of $25.00. The other shirt I bought was FIVE DOLLARS. Whoa. It was pretty much the best moment of my life.

I wore this outfit a couple of weeks ago, when we were experiencing another period of strangely warm weather and I was still in the middle of the hell of law school exams. (I somehow managed to forget to post the photos. Forgive me; my brain was fried.) I had spent a long day studying at school, and when I arrived home late in the evening, B and I decided to go out for Mexican food, which always cheers me up. I threw on a blazer, quickly put my hair up, and we dashed out the door. Despite my ridiculous messy bun and lack of makeup (ugh, gross), I think I like the evening version of my outfit better. Which do you prefer?

Crock-Pot Peanut Butter & Spinach Tofu

I found this recipe on the blog "A Year of Slow Cooking." For the most part, I really liked it. The tofu in peanut butter sauce really was delicious. I added the spinach for a little something extra, but I don't think it complemented the tofu particularly well. I'll definitely make the peanut butter tofu again, but next time I'll probably leave out the spinach and just have the tofu over rice.

Here's what you'll need:

Extra firm tofu

1/2 cup peanut butter

2 T soy sauce

Lime

1/2 t ginger

2-3 cloves of garlic, chopped

1/4 t crushed red pepper flakes

Bag or can of baby spinach (if you want it)

Rice, if you want to eat your tofu over rice

Here's what you'll do:

1. Cube the tofu and toss with a tablespoon or so of cornstarch. Pan-fry on the stove in butter.

2. Add tofu to crock-pot with peanut butter, soy sauce, several lime slices, garlic and pepper flakes.

3. Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours. If using spinach, add to crock-pot 15-30 minutes before serving and cover.

4. Serve over rice.

One of the many things my best friend and I have in common is our love for clothes. Particularly, we are both mildly obsessed with scarves and plaid. Every Christmas and birthday inevitably includes a gift exchange of scarves and usually of plaid in one form or another. This outfit includes two such gifts: the scarf I'm wearing was a birthday gift two years ago, and my plaid shirt was this year's Christmas gift. Don't worry, she gave me a scarf too.

I wore this outfit on New Year's Day for a walk and coffee with B. It was 52 degrees. Can you believe it? We've been so spoiled this "winter," even though today is supposed to be really, really cold.

Last Wednesday was another unseasonably warm day (I'm not even surprised anymore), so I wore this outfit - without a coat! - while B and I ran some errands on Boylston Street. We walked by the Old South Church on our way to the Apple store, and it was the perfect place to stop and snap a few outfit pictures.

This hat is B's. He brought it out from hiding the other day to wear himself, but I snagged it up before he had a chance. I love fedoras, and I think this one is especially great because it's brown and black, which is one of my favorite color combos right now. I built the rest of my outfit around it, keeping things simple and letting the hat make a statement.

Queso Blanco Tacos

This is a simple and delicious recipe that is easily a favorite of mine.

Here's what you'll need (This recipe made 4 good sized tacos. Increase accordingly if you'd like more servings):
2 plum tomatoes, cut into chunks
1 ripe avocado, peeled, pitted, and cut into chunks
Romaine lettuce
Salsa to taste
1 package queso blanco, cut into slices
Hard taco shells

Here's what you'll do:
1. Head non-stick skillet over low heat until hot. Add cheese and heat, turning once, until it gets warm/brown/slightly melted.
2. Place the rest of the ingredients into the taco shells and add cheese on top.

Much to my husband's dismay, I absolutely love borrowing clothing from his wardrobe and incorporating it into my outfits. This vintage plaid button-down is the latest in the long list of items I've borrowed. I've had my eyes on this shirt for awhile now, but I was a little stumped about how to style it: it's a good deal too big for me, and it looks rather shapeless and boyish on my body, which is obviously not at all flattering. However, I was determined to make it work, so I accessorized to try to accomplish a more feminine aesthetic. I added a belt around my waist for shape and a set of pearls to add a hint of girlishness to an otherwise tomboyish outfit. I also opted for leggings rather than pants to give the shirt more of a tunic vibe. I'm happy with the way it turned out, and I can't wait to get creative with other items in B's closet.

A Nerdy Tour of Beacon Hill

As some of you may know, I have a Master's in English Literature. In other words, I'm a huge nerd. Recently, I discovered that some literary greats lived in Beacon Hill in their days, so B and I set out to see their former residences.

131 Mt. Vernon St. is the former address of Henry James, who once referred to Mt. Vernon as "the only respectable street in America." James is one of my favorite American writers and critics, so I had a bit of a moment seeing his home. Can you tell how excited I was?

Next, we visited the former home of Robert Frost, which is also located on Mt. Vernon Street. Truth be told, Frost isn't a favorite of mine, but I do respect him and think it's pretty cool that he lived in Boston.

Last, we saw Louisa May Alcott's house at 10 Louisburg Square. I have such a sentimental attachment to Alcott, as Little Women was the first novel I read on my own as a child.

I adore the cobblestone in Louisburg Square, which is one of the most desirable places to live in America (or so I've read). John Kerry lives here too, but of course I can't find his address. Maybe I'll just creep around more often in hopes of spotting him.

Other celebs - past and present - have/had homes in Beacon Hill, but finding their addresses can be tough - I assume because the city wants to keep its tour guides in business. Do you know of any other worthwhile homes to visit in the area?

Museum of Science Part II: A Day in Pompeii

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, B and I spent last Friday at the Museum of Science. "A Day in Pompeii" was easily my favorite exhibit, and I hope through these photos you'll see why. In reality, the exhibit is more like two separate ones, the first highlighting the home life, art and culture, religion, society, and entertainment of those who lived in Pompeii. This portion of the exhibit includes frescoes, statutes, jewelry, and household items that were pristinely preserved under the volcanic ash of Mt. Vesuvius. Together, these artifacts give an exceptional glimpse into the rich culture of the city prior to its ruin.

The second portion of the exhibit is a sort of post-Vesuvius world, including computer-generated videos of the volcanic eruption and body casts. Created in 1860, when archaeologist Guiseppe Fiorelli poured plaster into these cavities, the casts have preserved the very moments of death of some of Vesuvius's victims. Viewing the casts, which function as powerful works of art as well as incredible historical artifacts, was a truly moving experience. They capture fear and anguish in stark detail, from the expressions on the victims' faces to the shapes of their bodies and the folds in their clothing. This portion of the exhibit provides a valuable historical and cultural experience, as well as an almost voyeuristic look into the private moments of the victims as they encounter their own mortality. It serves as a powerful reminder of the transient nature of the individual human life and of entire cultures.

I highly recommend visiting the Museum of Science, if for no other reason than to view "A Day in Pompeii." It may not be the most fun or uplifting exhibit, but it is both interesting and moving, and it is certainly a worthwhile experience. The exhibit will run through February 12, 2012.

Friday afternoon, B and I had the pleasure of visiting the Museum of Science thanks to a pair of complimentary tickets. It was an incredibly fun day that stimulated both my adult interests and childhood fancies. Even after spending several hours wandering around, we left feeling like there was so much more we could have seen and done.

The most fascinating exhibit was, certainly, "A Day in Pompeii," which gives a glimpse into the city through hundreds of artifacts, from household items to body casts of victims of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. The exhibit was so incredible that it really deserves its own post, so stay tuned for that tomorrow. Until then, enjoy some of my favorite photos from the rest of the museum!

It was a great, low-key night. Have I mentioned how much I love being on break?

Take Refuge

B had a crazy busy day yesterday (which totally figures now that I'm flush with free time), but we managed to spend the morning together. We ran a few errands - like finally mailing Christmas packages to our friends and family - and had breakfast at The Refuge Cafe. Refuge is a super cute cafe (see pics below) in Allston with a unique, extensive menu, including coffee, teas, breakfast and lunch foods.. and beer. As much as I was tempted by the prospect of beer for breakfast, I opted for a cranberry nut muffin and iced coffee instead. Both were delicious!

Homemade Mac & Cheese

One of the items on my agenda for break is to start cooking more meals at home. First on the list: crock-pot mac & cheese. I'd never made homemade macaroni and cheese, let alone in a crock-pot, so I was skeptical. I should have known better. Seriously, the crock-pot is a magical appliance, and this macaroni and cheese was probably the best I've ever had.

What you'll need:

1 box uncooked macaroni

4 cups of milk (I used non-fat)

1 egg

4 cups shredded cheese (I used 3 cups cheddar, 1 cup swiss)

1/2 t salt
2 tsp mustard

What you'll do:

1. In a mixing bowl, mix egg and milk together.

2. Add remaining ingredients: macaroni, cheese, salt, and mustard. Stir well to combine

3. Spray crock-pot with non-stick spray and pour the mixture in. Cover and cook on low for 3-5 hours, or on high for 1-3. The cooking time will vary depending on what size crockpot you are using and how quickly it heats and cooks. Mine was ready to eat after about two hours on high.

I first spotted it at The Limited early last summer, but it was way expensive, and I didn't buy it in hopes it would go on sale. After a couple months of waiting and an awesome coupon, I managed to snag it for a mere $20. Then I stashed it away and forgot about it until last week. I would have preferred to use it for some fabulous occasion, but, alas, I don't have time for fabulous occasions right now. So instead I packed my books in it and took a trip to the library for a day of studying. Sigh.

In other news, I'm taking my last exam of the semester today, which means that, starting tomorrow, I'll be a real person again. Woohoo!

Falafel Queen

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but until very recently, I had never eaten falafel. Then a friend introduced me to Falafel King, an aptly named restaurant a mere moment from my school. Their falafel roll-up is, easily, one of my favorite meals.

Yesterday I made my own falafel, and I'm proud and excited to report that it was good. Really good. B and I ate it with hummus and hot sauce. It was simple and delicious.

Here's what you'll need:
1 15-ounce can of chickpeas
1 small onion
5 cloves of garlic
1/4 cup dried parsley (or 1/2 cup fresh)
2 teaspoons of cumin
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
Chili powder to taste
6 tablespoons flour
Vegetable oil for frying

Here's what you'll do:
1) In a food processor, finely chop the onions, garlic, parsley, and chickpeas.
2) Add your spices: cumin, salt, and chili powder.
3) Mix in the flour and baking powder.
4) Cover and place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
5) After the mixture has been refrigerated, heat up vegetable oil for frying.
6) While waiting for the oil to warm, form the falafel balls (I use two spoons and slip them into the oil one by one).
7) Leave falafel balls in the oil until they are golden brown.

I've never felt that red looks particularly good on me, so I don't have much red in my wardrobe. It's a tragedy, really, because I do love the color, and I'm always drawn toward it in the winter months. Recently, I found myself regretting the fact that I don't own a red button-down (which is ridiculous, considering my extensive button-down collection), and hubby made the mistake of mentioning that he had one. Of course, I promptly stole it from his closet and was wearing it before he could voice any objection. Since it's a men's shirt and, therefore, a bit big on me, I decided I could get away with pairing it with leggings instead of more structured pants. I like the way it turned out. Do you agree?

Recently, my life has become quite predictable. Sigh. I spend all day every day studying, taking breaks only for food and coffee (and blogging, obvi). Things could be worse, to be sure, but I can't help but feel like I'm in a bit of a rut. Traditionally, a surefire way to bring myself out of a slump is to get a little dressed up. I gave it a try yesterday by putting on one of my favorite skirts to meet B for lunch. It really did help! I don't know about you, but I am so much happier and more productive when I wear an outfit I love.

Oh, and here is the delicious sandwich I had from Kupel's in Brookline: whole wheat bagel with low fat veggie cream cheese, lettuce, and cucumbers. Mmm.

One of the trends I've been most inspired by this fall/winter is brights. I love that my fellow bloggers aren't afraid to wear colors that would normally be relegated to the warmer months. Last year over Christmas break, I was really sick. I still don't know exactly what was wrong with me (I think perhaps a reeaally bad sinus infection), but I couldn't get out of bed for about a week and a half. What did I do while I was bedridden, you may be asking? Well.. I watched a lot of television (every single episode of Breaking Bad and Monster Quest) and did a lot of online shopping. This dress was one of my purchases, and I somehow managed to forget to wear it until now. I originally bought it to wear in the summer, and while that's certainly a possibility, I am actually loving it for fall.

Saturday was one of those days that was unexpectedly great. I spent most of the day studying for an upcoming exam, but I took a break in the early afternoon, and B and I took a walk. We decided to stay close to our apartment, which, admittedly, is not a particularly exciting area. During our walk we stumbled upon Twin Donuts. Life-changing! They have amazing, cheap breakfast foods ranging from donuts to sandwiches to omelets, and, more importantly, they sell 20-ounce iced chai teas for $2.15! Needless to say, it's pretty much my new favorite place in the entire world.

I'm going to be honest: I wasn't sure if I liked this outfit enough to photograph it for the blog. Then B met me after class and said, "This outfit is one of my favorites so far." Given his excellent taste, I decided to trust his judgment in hopes that you'd agree with him. Now that I'm looking at the pictures, I like the outfit more than I did originally, and I'm glad to be sharing it with you for a couple of reasons. First, check out my new winter boots! As some of you know, I searched everywhere for several months to find a pair of boots that were affordable, stylish, and functional. This pair fit the bill, as did a pair of black boots that I'm sure you'll see soon. I especially love the fur lining, which is both cute and comfy. Second, I thrifted this jacket (new with tags!) for $5.99. Retail price on the tag? $129. I don't wanna brag, but can you believe that deal?!

I wore this outfit for a walk around Beacon Hill with hubby and sister when she was still here last week. The photos above are just a few random shots of cute things I saw around the neighborhood.

It took awhile for me to jump on the maxi bandwagon. I loved them in theory and on other people, but I convinced myself they wouldn't be flattering on me. I bought one early last summer as an experiment and quickly bought several more because I was so in love. While I still don't know if maxi dresses are particularly flattering on me, I do know that they're darn comfortable - and versatile too! I'm having so much fun styling my various maxis for fall. My favorite way to to so is with lots of layers, comfy sweaters, and scarves.

Last Saturday was sister's last day in the city. It was 60 degrees and sunny, a perfect day for a stroll on Newbury Street, which was surprisingly quiet and calm for a Saturday afternoon. Hot & Spicy Tofu

I don't know about you, but I love tofu. It's incredibly versatile and, I think, quite delicious. I found this recipe for hot and spicy tofu on allrecipes.com and knew I'd love it. I'm confident you'll love it too. Warning: it is legitimately hot and spicy, so you might want to adjust the ingredients if you want a milder recipe.

Here's what you'll need:
3 tablespoons peanut oil
1 pound firm tofu, cubed
1 red onion, sliced
1 red bell pepper, sliced
1 green chile pepper, chopped
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1/3 cup hot water
3 tablespoons white vinegar
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

*B and I ate our tofu over rice, so if you want to do the same, you should also have some rice around.

Here's what you'll do:
1. Heat peanut oil in a wok or large frying pan over medium-high heat. Toss the tofu into the oil, and cook until browned on all sides. Once browned, toss in onion, bell pepper, chile pepper, and garlic; cook until just tender, about 5 minutes.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together the hot water, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, cornstarch, and red pepper flakes. Pour over tofu and vegetables, toss to coat, and simmer 3 to 5 minutes, or until sauce thickens slightly.

*If you decide, like we did, to eat your tofu over rice, you'll also have to cook the rice during this process. I made mine in the microwave while everything simmered together, and the timing worked out well.

Black Bean Veggie Burgers

B and I consider ourselves to be veggie burger connoisseurs, so we finally decided to make our own. This recipe is fairly basic and easy, and the result is delicious.

Here's what you'll need:
1 (16 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 green bell pepper, cut into 2 inch pieces
1/2 onion, cut into wedges
3 cloves garlic, peeled
1 egg
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 teaspoon hot sauce
1/2 cup bread crumbs

You'll also need buns and any condiments and toppings you'll want. B and I used focaccia rolls for buns and topped our burgers with tomatoes and a little bit of spinach, as well as ketchup and mustard.

Here's what you'll do:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F, and lightly oil a baking sheet.
2. In a medium bowl, mash black beans with a fork until thick and pasty.
3. In a food processor, finely chop bell pepper, onion, and garlic. Then stir into mashed beans.
4. In a small bowl, stir together egg, chili powder, cumin, and hot sauce.
5. Stir the egg mixture into the mashed beans. Mix in bread crumbs until the mixture is sticky and holds together. Divide mixture into four patties.
6. Place patties on baking sheet, and bake about 10 minutes on each side.

Okay, I'm going to tell you guys a story that's going to make B mad. I feel like we're on that level. Once, toward the beginning of our relationship, B picked me up for a date. I was all dolled up and wearing a purple tank top and purple headband. I can't remember the rest of the outfit, but that's immaterial. B walked into my apartment and immediately scoffed, "Why are you so purple?" You can imagine how well that went over with me at the time (read: not well at all), but I swear I'm almost over it now. I tell you this story because I'm still a little hesitant to wear purple, though it's finally starting to creep back into my closet. I hope you all don't hate it as much as B does.

I bought this skirt at Target a couple years ago for $4.99 on clearance. Holler! It's been sitting in a drawer since then, initially because I wasn't sure how to style it, more recently because I'd forgotten about it. (I do that a lot, if you haven't noticed. It's not one of my better tendencies.) I don't know what I was thinking before, but now I'm sure this skirt will prove to be super versatile and well worth the $5 investment.

I don't know how the weather has been elsewhere, but it has been incredible in Boston. 65 and sunny in November! I'm taking advantage of the unseasonable warmth by spending as much time outside as I possibly can. Yesterday, in between class and mountains of homework, B and I wandered around aimlessly for a couple of hours. All I know for sure is that we started out Downtown and ended up in Chinatown; I know very little of what happened in-between. We were mildly lost most of the time, but that was part of the fun.

Vegetarian Chili

The weather was cold in Boston last weekend. I'm talking snow, people. Perfect chili weather, right? One of my Twitter followers sent me a link to this vegetarian chili recipe on about.com. It was quick and easy to prepare, and it was incredibly good. We ate ours with some shredded cheddar cheese and corn bread.

Here's what you'll need:
1 onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 bell pepper, chopped
2 carrots, sliced thin (I used a can of baby carrots, instead)
1 1/2 cup corn
1 zucchini, diced
2 15 oz cans diced tomatoes
1/2 cup water
1 1/2 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
dash of cayenne pepper

Here's what you'll do:
1. Combine all ingredients in a crock pot or slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.

My afternoon class was canceled on Friday. Holler! B and I took advantage of my afternoon off by heading to the Copley Square Farmers Market. There is so much good stuff there, including produce, cheeses, sandwiches, fresh cider, and giant cookies. Okay, you caught me, I ate a giant cookie. Right after I ate a giant falafel wrap.

I liked this outfit more before I put the vest on; however, when I got out of my morning class it was freezing, and I only had this vest in my locker. I guess I'm lucky it matched at least. It's getting cold in Boston, folks!

One of the reasons I started this blog was to challenge myself to be more creative with my wardrobe. I don't claim to have made any outrageous fashion choices since then, but I am becoming a little bolder. In the past, for example, these shorts would have been relegated to my summer-only clothing bin. I came across them the other day and, as I was about to put them away until next year, I decided I'd try to style them for fall instead. It was a fairly easy transition: add tights, boots, and a favorite blazer. Not earth-shattering, I admit, but it was a conscious decision to try something I wouldn't have tried before. So I think I'm making progress, even if the changes are perceptible only to me.

My dear friend Tomee sent me this scarf as a birthday gift last week. She has great taste. I think the print is lovely, but I what I like best is the color combo of navy and red-orange. Isn't it perfect for fall?

Speaking of fall, I'm loving the beautiful, cool evenings we've had recently. The weather has been perfect for walks, and B and I have really been exploring our neighborhood and the surrounding areas. There's so much to see, and I want to soak up every moment of this weather before winter comes.

You all know how much I love fall. Rarely will you hear me complain about this time of year; however, my allergies have been unbearable this season. Some days my eyes burn so badly that I can wear my contacts only very briefly, if at all, so my glasses have been getting a lot of wear recently. I know, I know, I look super nerdy (I'm not ashamed!), but I just had to take outfit photos to show you my blazer, which I recently thrifted. It's a little big, so I may eventually have it tailored, but it's definitely one of my favorite fall pieces.

Have you ever bought something and totally forgotten about it? That's what happened with these pants. I bought them a couple of months ago, thinking, "These are my new favorite pants, and I will wear them constantly!" Then I promptly hung them in my closet and forgot about them until a few days ago. Oops. I really do love them, though (mostly because their particular shade of light golden brown is my new obsession), and I'm hoping to have a few more opportunities to wear them before it's time to put the ankle-length pants away for the year.

Allandale Farm

On Sunday, B and I went to Allandale Farm, which, remarkably, is a mere 15 minutes from our apartment, in South Brookline. I've been dying to go ever since I stumbled across it on the internet, so Sunday I took a break from homework, put on my new favorite dress, and went for a short drive to the farm with B. It was everything I'd hoped for. Pumpkins? Check! Hot apple cider and apple cider donuts? Check! Beautiful fall foliage? Check! Cute farm animals? Check! Seriously, the farm is incredible, and I just know it's going to become one of our favorite spots. There's also a gorgeous cemetery across the street, which I can't wait to check out.

I love that the little pies are called "cuties." Hehe.

Fresh, hot apple cider. I've had the most intense craving for it, which is finally satisfied!

My new BFF. This guy loved me. He approached me and immediately started to rub his huge head all over me and, as you can clearly see here, give me kisses. He knows I'm vegetarian; hence our bond.

Do you guys know that BU has its own castle? Seriously. Perhaps the coolest part about it is that its basement is a pub. Before you get too excited, however, you should know that apparently only BU faculty, staff, students and alums, none of which I am, are allowed in said pub. (Fortunately I read about this fact before trying to get in. That would have been embarrassing!) So my initial excitement over the castle has now turned mostly to bitterness. I'll show you, BU, by creeping around outside your castle and taking outfit photos.

Pumpkin Fondue

Here's what you'll need:
1 (15-inch) baguette, cut into 1/2-inch slices (7 ounces total)
1 (7-lb) orange pumpkin
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 cup reduced-sodium vegetable broth
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
2 1/2 cups coarsely grated Gruyère cheese (6 oz)
2 1/2 cups coarsely grated Emmental cheese (6 oz)
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt & pepper

Here's what you'll do:

1. Preheat oven to 450°F

2. Toast baguette slices in 1 layer on a baking sheet in oven until tops are crisp, about 7 minutes. Transfer to a rack to cool.

3. Remove top of pumpkin by cutting a circle around stem with a small sharp knife. Scrape out seeds and any loose fibers from inside pumpkin with a spoon (including top of pumpkin). Season inside of pumpkin with 1/2 teaspoon salt.

4. Whisk together cream, broth, nutmeg, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper in a bowl. Mix together cheeses in another bowl.

5. Put a layer of toasted bread in bottom of pumpkin, then cover with about 1 cup cheese and about 1/2 cup cream mixture. Continue layering bread, cheese, and cream mixture until pumpkin is filled to about 1/2 inch from top, using all of cream mixture. (You may have some bread and cheese left over.)

6. Cover pumpkin with top and put in an oiled small roasting pan. Brush outside of pumpkin all over with olive oil. Bake until pumpkin is tender and filling is puffed, 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.

7. To eat, scoop bread and cheese mixture out of pumpkin, as well as the pumpkin itself, which will easily separate from the skin after being baked.

B & I made this recipe for dinner a couple nights ago, and it was phenomenal. We made the full recipe, though, not realizing it was meant to feed six people, and we had a ton leftover. Next time, we'll definitely scale the proportions down. It would be perfect as is, however, as an appetizer or snack for a small fall-themed get-together.

Until this fall I didn't own a denim jacket; now I'm wondering how I lived without one! Versatility is key in my wardrobe, and I love the fact that I can throw this jacket on over almost anything - t-shirt, tank, sweater, dress - for a casual, put-together look. It's quick and easy but still cute, which is exactly what I need sometimes (read: as I'm running out the door late for class). What are some of the staple pieces in your wardrobe?
